Files in use tend to be locked which prevents their copying, moving or deletion but Shadow Copy allows you to make copies of files from one location to another while in use. An entire drive can be copied or a selected folder or subfolders wildcard options among other features.
Shadow Copy uses the Volume Shadow Service (VSS) from Microsoft and can run from command prompt for automated or scheduled backups.
